When we talk about robots, the first name that come to out mind is the iconic humanoid, ASIMO by Honda. Now as we know that ASIMO is not around us anymore, we are going to miss it’s cute face. Yes, HONDA has retired ASIMO and has launched few concept robots in CES 2018. Today we are here to see a new Humanoid developed by Boston Dynamics which is much more advance and is built for future, named ATLAS.
Atlas controls are commendable, you can watch the video and decide yourself of its balance and stability when you see it doing somersault with elan. It’s control system coordinates motions of the arms, torso and legs to achieve whole-body mobile manipulation. It also greatly expands its reach and workspace. Atlas’ can perform most tasks with great stability. Its compact and takes less space while performing tasks.
The Atlas hardware are made out of 3D printing that enabled it to save on weight and space, resulting in a remarkable compact robot with high strength-to-weight ratio and a dramatically large workspace. It’s stereo vision, range sensing and numerous other sensors give Atlas the ability to manipulate objects in its environment.
Atlas weighs 75 kg and can lift payload upto 11 kg and its height is 1.5 m, battery powered and has 28 joints.
Atlas can easily travel on rough terrain and keeps its balance even when jostled or pushed and can even get up if it tips over. Watch the video below:
Atlas hold a lot of promises as a humanoid and has clearly taken place of Asimo. Although ASIMO will remain as an inspiration for all the future robots that will be built.
Asimo, stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility. Work on ASIMO began in the ‘80s and it was eventually unveiled in 2000. It will always be the cute adorable robot that had its ups and downs before fall of curtain over it. For Honda in robotics, four new cute helper robots have been introduced with each having its unique functionality.
These robots are comprised of a companion bot, an autonomous off-road vehicle, and two “mobility” concepts, all with similarly non-threatening and cute designs. Other robotics products from Honda include the Uni-Cub, a wheel you sit down on and steer by leaning, and the Walking Assist – a harness that aids in walking. These cute robots are hard to ignore. Robots are getting better and better and will soon be seen amongst us walking hand in hand. Work is underway on humanoids to look like humans too and soon we will be seeing human like robots. Also to add, AI is progressing leaps and bounds and it is already very much integrated with robotics. Soon we are going to see astounding robots amongst us and at the same time hoping for the best.
